NOBODY’S FAMILY

Jake was shaking with rage. Every ounce of his devil-may-care attitude had vanished. Big day for him, actually. He’s showing a wide range of emotions outside his usual arrogance. It’s easy to understand why, though, right? Mira is the mother who abandoned him, after all. Dios watched with unbridled joy as the two reunited.

“Jakey! Just in time!” Ira’s voice came through. “You remember mommy dearest, don’t you?” She stoked the fire. Jake marched down the aisle. Mira scowled at the advancing boy until he was a foot in front of her. No words, just action. Jake wound up and swung a violent punch at Mira. His fist went all the way through her with no resistance, causing him to lose balance and fall onto all fours. Mira’s body dissipated. He put everything into that assault. Punching through air was immensely unsatisfying.

“Crude. Inelegant. Embarrassing.” Mira re-appeared, sitting in the foremost pew. “I knew you’d be just like your father. Disgusting.” Jake whipped his head toward his mother.

“Shut up. Like I’d care what some whore thinks,” Jake spat. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was on the verge of crying.

“And an astounding lack of vocabulary on top of it all. Please,” Mira got up and glided over to the boy, “at least try to diversify your insults.” She towered over him. He looked up with those angry eyes right before she slapped him down to the ground. “Now,” Mira turned her attention back to Dios, “where were we?” Dios clapped enthusiastically.

“I cannot tell you how long we’ve all been waiting to see that!” Dom exclaimed.

“Again, again!” Orv pleaded. Mira ignored the encore. Dios savored one last look at the aftermath before continuing their walk with Mira.

“Failures!” Jake hollered, getting back up to his feet.

“Jake, if I were you, I’d really just call this one,” Ira advised. “Or don’t. Whether you leave or get beat up doesn’t matter. It’s a win-win.”

“The composer just confronted me.” Jake brought up Dios’s unfinished business. “In my house.” Dios gave full attention now. Mira also perked up. Talk of the composer was on topic.

“Go on,” Dom prodded.

“She broke my shield,” Jake revealed.

“She broke the Silence’s guard?” Mira was intrigued. Jake looked away from her, refusing to acknowledge anything she was saying. “Oh, please. Don’t be such a child.”

“Why are you even here?” Jake asked, continuing to avert his gaze.

“Back to being useful.” Dom snapped his fingers. Mira ignored the question. Jake exhaled aggressively. He wanted nothing more in that moment than to fully awaken and bring everyone to their knees. The troubles of being a pre-teen, am I right?

“Her and her little plush. They were able to break it. However, they could barely move after. I think that’s their limit,” Jake reluctantly answered.

“That’s good. It means she can’t sustain that kind of power,” Mira noted. “Still, to destroy the Silence’s guard is no meager feat. For a new composer, it’s almost unheard of.” Mira shot a look at Dios as if to say, “I told you so.
